First Gun Violence Roundtable

Uncategorized / Monday, August 6th, 2018

Gun Violence Working Group had its very first official meeting Friday in Haverhill and I have to say it was a huge success. Excellent speakers on the agenda included Megan O’Keefe who informed us of a group of students at Pentucket HS who will be working on this issue, and Rep. Andy Vargas who informed us of plans to curb violence in our communities by funding treatment for mental health issues and school security.

Also speaking was Jim Wallace, Executive Director at GOAL, who spoke about the multitude of gun laws already in place that are not fully enforced and prosecuted. LE from Georgetown, Groveland and Haverhill spoke extensively on this issue and how they often apprehend criminals who are then able to plea bargain down serious gun crimes. Unacceptable!

Next on the agenda: the DA’s office to explain how and why this happens.

Thanks to all who attended! It’s great to get all sides working together on this issue.
